Historical Notes

San Mauro Mare is just 7 kilometres from the town of San Mauro Pascoli, in the immediate hinterland. The name of the town already denotes a peculiarity: this is the birthplace of Giovanni Pascoli, among the major Italian poets of the 19th and 20th centuries. Worth a visit is the Pascoli House, a national monument since 1924, a small but interesting domestic museum which continues to house the interiors as they were when the poet lived there in his early youth and Villa Torlonia, the country home of the Torlonia family: here, while the poplars of the Rio Salto murmured (remember “La cavallina storna”?) Giovanni Pascoli’s father, a farmer of the Torlonia family, was killed while returning from Cesena market on that mysterious evening of 10th August 1867.
